Hong Kong

Travelling through Hong Kong, Gilad Passerby was amazed to see the intense city life mixed with the wild nature that surrounds it. Feeling that the many tall buildings appear as forests.

This combination led Passerby to an insight that even the most urban city is only alive due to the natural elements in it, therefore the city’s pulse is based on human hearts and can be perceived and analyzed as part of the wild nature that surrounds it. This also led to the conclusion that City life and wildlife cannot be separated.

The same goes for new technology and the environment. Both are parts of life that don’t need to contradict or hurt each other and are dependent on the balance we find within ourselves.

The song’s mix of current Hong Kong futuristic cyberpunk style sounds and visuals with ancient Cantonese opera is like hearing this dialogue between them and finding the connection they both share, which is the human spirit that echoes between them.

PASSERBY:
Life is video number 16 of Project 34 for China dedicated to Hong Kong

Passerby: “I remember seeing Hong Kong for the first time as a child, visiting with my father. I remember seeing the many tall buildings built inside wild nature and being Amazed by this mixture.

Although having seen this mix, in later years I was taught about the difference between city life and natural life, learning they are separate lives.

Returning to Hong Kong years later, I tried to imagine the city without people and understood it would have no life. All the urban sounds are based on the energy of organic life. Therefore, I understood that there is no real separation between city and nature, as they are united by their movement of life – the same life – and Hong Kong’s unique contrast helped me see that”.
